-thousand eight hundred und ninely seven Between The Undersigned One of the Crown Agents for the Colonies of Lowning Street London in the County of Middlesex aching for and on behalf of The Government of Hong Kong (hereinafter called the Government of the one part and John Gowanlock of 12 Blackshaw Lane Deane Road Bolton in the County of Lancaster of the other part.

The said John Gowanlock (hereinafter called - the person engaged) is hereby selected for appointment as an Overseer in the Public Works Department of Hong Hong on the terms and conditions hereafter set forth. The term of engagement of the person engaged shall be Three years from the date of his arrival in Hong Kong which period may be extended as provided in clause 10.

The person engaged shall proceed to Hong Kong at such time as shall be prescribed by the Crown Agents for the Colonies the Government providing him with railway fare third class to port of embarkation und a free passage second claws to Hong Kong and (subject to clause 7) back again to England including) railway fare third class to place of
